Had the strangest birthday ever in one of the top 10 world’s Creepiest places: The Capuchin Catacombs in Palermo, Sicily. They have mummified over 8000 residents dating back to the 1700s!
I was so creeped out that I couldn’t even pass through one of the hallways because all of the dead people were staring at me.
So officially for my 23rd birthday I “saw dead people.”
The first person to be mummified was a Capuchin Monk who the locals wanted to pray to after his death. Everyone liked praying to him so much, they wanted for their relatives to be included in all the “fun.” In the wills of some of the people who knew they were going to be put in the Catacombs, they wrote what they wanted to be wearing. The clothes, just let me tell you, don’t last as long as the bones do. And it’s pretty popular for jaws and skulls to fall off the dead. They take the skulls that fall off (leaving some mummies headless and SUPER creepy) and put them in the front room. There are hallways for men, women, professionals, a couple of soldiers still in their French Battalion uniforms, lots of babies (so strange), and a hall for virgins (why they feel the need to distinguish them, I’m not sure…)
They are so close to you that you could reach out and touch them but I for sure was NOT about to do that. We also weren’t allowed to take pictures (but we did anyway! sneaky sneaky! super cheeky!) so I got this one off the internet so I wouldn’t have any incriminating photos!
